Fighting Big Tobacco in Mexico

In this short documentary we follow the story of Dr Rafael Camacho Solis, a medical doctor and one of the early leaders of the anti-smoking movement in Mexico. His fight with Big Tobacco was long and brutal and eventually lead to his dismissal from the Mexican Ministry of Health. But that didn’t stop him continuing his public health advocacy into his retirement – in his mid-70s he now leads anti-addiction campaigns in the non-government sector.

Dr Rafael was himself a smoker for 30 years, having started as a young man before the negative impacts were widely know. Although he quit many years ago, he still suffers from severe impacts of emphysema on a daily basis. This film formed part of the Our Views, Our Voices campaign – bringing the voices of patient advocates to the global health debate.
